How zakat is worked out

Zakat is 2.5% of the wealth you have held for a full lunar year, once that wealth is at or above the nisab. Add up what you own that counts for zakat, take away debts you must pay now, and check the total against the nisab. If it is at or above the nisab, 2.5% of the total is due. On Rs 1,500,000 that is Rs 37,500.

What counts: cash at home and in bank accounts, gold and silver, shares, mutual fund units, savings certificates and prize bonds, stock a business holds for sale, and money others owe you that you expect back. What does not count: the house you live in, your car, furniture and other things you use yourself.

What is the nisab in Pakistan for 1447 AH?

The government fixed the nisab for the Zakat year 1446-47 AH at Rs 503,529, notified on 16 February 2026 for deduction on the first day of Ramadan 1447. The Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980 defines nisab as the value of 612.32 grams of silver (about 52.5 tola), or 87.48 grams of gold (about 7.5 tola) for a person whose zakatable wealth is only gold. The rupee figure follows the price of silver, which is why it rose from Rs 179,689 the year before.

The calculator uses Rs 503,529 by default. Many scholars ask you to use the value of silver on the day your zakat year ends instead. If yours does, enter that figure in the nisab box.

How does the bank deduct zakat?

On the first day of Ramadan, banks deduct 2.5% from savings and profit-and-loss sharing accounts with a balance of Rs 503,529 or more, and deposit it in the Central Zakat Account at the State Bank. Accounts below the nisab are not touched. Current accounts and foreign currency accounts are not deducted from. The same law lets fixed deposits, savings certificates, fund units and shares be deducted at source when the first return of the zakat year is paid.

Zakat the bank already deducted counts towards what you owe. Leave those amounts out of the calculator, or subtract the deduction from the result.

How can I stop the bank deducting zakat?

Under section 3 of the Ordinance, a Muslim whose fiqh does not oblige paying zakat this way can file a sworn declaration with the bank at least 30 days before the first of Ramadan. Banks call it the CZ-50 form, and it has to be attested by a notary public. The declaration stays valid while the bank holds it. Filing it means you pay your zakat yourself.

What the calculator does not cover

  • Ushr on farm produce, which has its own rates (5% or 10% of the produce).
  • Questions where scholars differ, such as gold jewellery worn every day or a long-term home loan. Ask a scholar you trust and adjust the figures you enter.
  • Zakat on agricultural land, rental property or a business’s fixed assets, which are generally not zakatable. The rent or profit you hold in cash is.
